What are the key areas you feel you need to develop? What could hinder that development? 

I think the field I need to develop is market research, because I can search a lot of information in secondary research, but when I do primary research, I often don’t know what to research, what I need to record, and what aspects of research can help my later project development. I need to refer to what my classmates started the research from, and I can also ask the teacher for advice. However, because of my personality, I always feel that this will disturb others, so I never take the initiative to talk to them, which makes me still unable to answer the questions I don’t know how to deal with

How could you overcome the barriers to your development? 

I think I need to adjust my mentality. If I don’t understand or know what to do, I should learn to ask others and seek help from others. This is just a small thing, and I don’t think it will trouble others. If I don’t have a clear idea of how to do it, and I rely on my own guesses without asking others for help, then I may never be able to solve it, or even look in the wrong direction and lose time. Therefore, in some cases, it is not a shame or embarrassing thing to ask others for help. On the contrary, sometimes for me, helping others makes me feel a sense of accomplishment and proud of myself, so I think maybe other people will think the same way

Which areas do you need to work on to ensure your success?

First of all, listen carefully in the classroom, because only know what you need to do, then can keep up with the progress of learning, have a clear goal and direction of what you are doing, in order to bring more efficiency for the later work, so as to lay the foundation for success, otherwise even if the later steps do very good, but deviated from the center, then it is still a failure.

Business

Think about how you mange your time. What do you do well? 

In fact, I am a person who is easily distracted. Sometimes when I am doing my homework, I cannot stay focused and will be attracted by other interesting things. Therefore, at this time, I will play some soothing music, which can help me better immerse myself in the study and keep all my energy spent on it. When I’m focused, I’m good at visualization. At this time, my brain is extra relaxed and my thinking is more flexible

Which areas (listed above) do you think you need to work on? Why? How? 

Procrastination will make my work efficiency low, which makes it difficult for me to ensure the quality of work, because the original amount of work can be completed within the appropriate time, but because of my procrastination, the time will be shortened accordingly, which will make me under great pressure, and I need to speed up the work speed, so I am afraid that it is difficult to ensure the quality of work. Music can make me focus on my work and speed up my work efficiency, but this is only temporary. I need to solve the problem of my procrastination from the root of the problem

Design

design pathway , why is UAL different to other design based courses? 

When I took the design class, I thought it was just like the art class, which required us to draw pictures, but the object of painting was clothing. However, after the class, I found that the design class cared more about divergent thinking than drawing ability. For example, in the last class, the teacher asked us to draw the general shape with sulphate paper through the works of the artists we researched. Relying on this as the basis of the clothing silhouette designed by oneself, it will slowly guide you to enjoy your imagination in this way, and then gradually transform it into the clothing part. I think such a course exercises students’ creative thinking very much, and such a class is more vivid and interesting

Instinctive ideas – why is this important?

I think for design, painting technology can increase the expression of clothing, can make the painted clothing more texture, can better draw the clothing structure that I want to draw. But these are all techniques that can make clothing more colorful on the basis of design. So it’s very important to have an idea, if you don’t have something in your head, you can’t design a costume, you can’t draw anything, so I need to have an idea to support me to design a better costume

Tranforming research- why is your research interesting to you and your approach to the tasks?

I am very interested in women’s dress design, and I am very interested in studying some experiments on the shape structure and fabric transformation of women’s dress. I have two methods for designing clothing silhouette, one is to do silhouette experiments, and the other is to associate with shapes or elements from inspiration sources. I will draw many times on scratch paper, which may be rather sloppy, but with the development step by step, through changes in some details and constant modifications, I will finally draw a draft

Media

First of all, my advantage was to discover many elements that were conducive to my later design in the research, and to associate them with them to imagine how they should apply them to shoes, instead of copying the works of artists, and then drawing their works on shoes. However, I still have a lot of bad things about doing, such as I want to add too many elements, I don’t know how to choose which to use on my shoes, which leads to too many elements on my shoes, too messy, and no main display. And my ability to draw is not very good, so some of the shapes and structures I can imagine in my mind are not well planted 

How can you improve your skills?

I will spend at least 20 minutes to practice painting every day in the following days. Then I will save the paintings I have practiced each time and put them in my book. Only in this way can I see my progress, which will make me more confident and motivated to paint. In fact, I have already begun to practice, and in every painting class carefully listen to the teacher, carefully practice the homework left by the teacher to practice, I have gradually seen their own progress

Discuss how you achieved your outcome and what role you will take in the production of your styling task

In the process of research, I found that the artist made reference to yolnu culture when making her works. Therefore, I specially investigated the origin of yolnu culture before making the shoes, extracted many elements from that tribe, and then looked for similar materials that could be used in the shoes. Secondly, when I was shooting later, As a photographer and a model, because I think the shoes are designed by me, so I know more about how to shoot, how to show the shoes, how to represent them

Did you enjoy the process? Was it useful to your own development and skills?

I enjoy this process very much, which is different from all the painting classes I have taken before, and it is very interesting. In the previous painting class, I was simply asked to paint an object and copy it like printing a photo, while in the current class, I can draw my own style, and the teacher will constantly praise the students, which makes me more confident and more motivated for this class. Besides, in class, we not only draw pictures, but also make collages about clothes with the shoes we draw. This not only exercises our drawing ability and practical ability, but also exercises our association ability

Could you use this technique in other developments?

Of course, I think this technique is very practical and will be used frequently in my future design work. Because I want to choose a major related to design, first of all, painting skills are very important to me, because they can well show the clothes I designed and make them have good expression on paper. Secondly, this class will teach us how to associate the design of the area, and having good ideas is also a very important point in the design, because we need to have innovation

What could you improve in this technique?

In the past, I didn’t understand the role of shadows in painting techniques, and what texture of pens to choose for drafting and drawing lines. I also didn’t know what kind of relationship between lines, and how to draw Looking for angles, but after taking the painting class, I know how to explain the places I didn’t understand before, instead of drawing randomly like before, but have my own observations, and I know better, how to How to exercise your associative ability

How do you think you could be more productive in class?

As a matter of fact, every step the teacher taught me was simple and easy to operate, but the difficulty was that there were too many steps, and my memory was not good, so it was hard for me to remember, and I often forgot what I should do next step after the first step, which would take me a long time, so I think if I want to improve efficiency, First of all, I should take good notes in class, remember every step of the operation, only in this way I can remember, and practice more after class

What were some of your limitations when you are working digitally?

Because when I use a computer to do digital work, for me who is used to using pencils and apple pencils, the mouse will make me feel difficult to operate, not so flexible, and I don’t know much about computers, so The operation is very unfamiliar, and I can’t draw as I like, so when I study, my efficiency is always very slow, but I will practice more, as long as I keep in touch, I will be familiar with the operation, and I will learn in the future. Gradually adapt to digital work with computers

How does it make you see design/art differently? What else do you want to explore on your own?

In today’s class, I found that different light and shadow applications, different color changes and typesetting applications would make the picture present different effects. Moreover, I found that these operations are actually difficult to be done by mobile phone or ipad alone, but it is very easy to operate by computer, and changes can be more obvious, providing more convenient ways for people to choose. It can be more intuitive in design and create more form

How well could you complete the class tasks working on your own?Were you able to analyse the illustrate the details?

As a matter of fact, I think my ability to complete the homework independently is relatively poor, because my memory is not very good, and I am not proficient in computer technology, so I often forget the teaching steps of the teacher, for example, I forget which tool should be used to help me complete the composition and which tool should be used to help me color, so I always ask the teacher, Go and ask the teacher for guidance. But in the future, I will take notes in class, reduce the number of times I ask the teacher in class, and exercise my ability to finish the homework independently, so that I can review it after class

As a result of today’s session, what might you do differently next time?

Because I used to paint clothes with pencils on paper, but in fact, because my painting skills are not particularly good, I always spend a lot of time on it, which greatly reduces my work progress. After today’s study, I mastered the more convenient technology to update, which can improve my work efficiency and design more easily than before 

What might you need to do or follow up as a result of this session?

In this process, I need to do more practice, because I am not a very good at operating computer technology, so I need to practice more, because only with more practice, I can be more familiar with the application tools on the software, know what the functions of each application is, only in this way is really convenient for me to design, instead of not familiar, and then I slowly explore.

This is a reflection on the Toolbox program. The project involves three aspects: design, business and media.
First of all, I think the most powerful work in my A3 file is my consumer and store analysis, which is more thoughtful than any other work in my portfolio. I have a good business research page, because I have done a comprehensive survey. I will personally go to their stores to collect data and do a first-hand survey, such as recording how their Windows are designed, what the store furnishings are like, the daily customer flow rate, relevant explanations and comments between elements, and even collect some second-hand survey data online. For example, do they have online stores for consumers to choose from and do they have any activities to attract consumers? The collected information supports me to explain and evaluate the relationship between relevant elements. I took the whole project as a whole, made a cycle of thinking, and connected the information they collected into a series of views. To be specific, the structure, information selection and organization were consistent. For example, I thought about applying the research results into my products through the design of printing, the selection of fabrics and the creation of clothing silhouette. At the same time, I was thinking about promotional strategies that could attract consumers, and finally I made a good decision that showed my understanding of the audience and the environment.
In any case, there are still many problems with my Toolbox project that have not been properly handled. For example, when I was interpreting the presentation page, the images in my page were too cluttered and unfocused, and I could not clearly explain what I said. I should carefully consider the images I selected so that the most important images could be included. Secondly, when it came to my speech notes, I should first make sure that all the key points were covered in the speech. Obviously, due to my lack of experience, I was not fully prepared and missed many key points, which made the whole content of my speech not well connected. In addition, during the speech, my eyes were mostly focused on the A3 page displayed by me and the speech in my hand. In the next practice, I could consider making more eye contact and interacting with my tutor.
What I should reflect on most is that my favorite major is design, but currently there is not much work in my Toolbox project to support my interest in design, and I don’t show my strengths in design well, which is what I need to improve most. Therefore, in the next project, I will focus more on the design field of the project, for example, I will try to do some brainstorming about the project to stimulate my inspiration, and practice more drawing techniques.
These are my reflections in the first Toolbox project. I believe that I gained experience from this activity, so in the next project, I will be more familiar with the whole process, learn from the shortcomings of the last one, and continue some of my good work to enhance my strengths and avoid my weaknesses.
